A $5 per guest, per day fuel surcharge has been levied by Royal Caribbean Cruises in North America for all departures from February 1.

The company has followed Carnival Corporation in not introducing the supplement in the UK.

But Spanish arm Pullmantur has implemented a 50 euro fuel supplement for departures from January 1.

"We know the rising cost of fuel has affected everyone and, unfortunately, our company is no different," said chief financial officer Brian Rice.

Windstar Cruises, whihc operates three sailing yachts, has also imposed a fuel surcharge of $8.50 per person per day for sailings until March 2009 "due to escalating fuel prices". The supplement applies to departures that have not been paid in full by December 15.

Executive vice-president Diane Moore said: "We regret having to take this action and hope our clients understand the impact that fuel prices are having in today's economic envrionment."

We booked with an American travel agent and received an e-mail this morning saying we would need to pay this $5 a day charge for the first 2 passengers up to a maximum of $70 per person per sailing.

For example, the company will not apply the supplement on any bookings where the guest has already paid the full cost of the cruise.
