Yes - one of our favourite ports. We just wandered and had some lunch which was nice. I'll load my Cannes photos into the gallery for you.

There was an antique market the day we were there..and of course you get to see all the rich folks on their private beaches!!! Lovely town - just walking along La Croissette is wonderful up to the famous Carlton Hotel.

I'll dig out the photos..

Not the pettiest of places on the Riveira.

At our call there we planned to go the the Carlton and were very disappointed with the scruffiness and insolent service we had when we went to dine there.

After a drink and BEFORE we ordered food we decided to leave and I paid for our drinks. On leaving we were then chased down the street and accused of not paying our bill - I gave then very short shrift!

We then chanced upon the Relais Martinez, the brasserie restaurant for the 4* Martinez Hotel and the contrast in cleaniless and service was very marked. A very pleasant informal lunch al fresco.h

I note that out of town there is the famous Moulin de Mougins (formally Roger Verge's 3 Michelin * establishment) that seems to get good reports under it's new ownership.

Also on the Croisette is the Villa des Lys, which attracts 2 Michelin stars and has 4 RED "knives&forks". The received wisdom does suggest that recently promoted restaurants to 2* are te ones to go for as they are often pushing themselves to get the covetted 3 Michelin *'s.

I'm not saying it's expensive, but we ate at Kentucky Fried Pheasant! A tramp asked me for €5 for a croissant!

We actually went to Nice, which I really enjoyed.

It's a tender port, and the landing stage is fairly close to the arts centre where the film festival is held. I would say approx a 10 minute walkl from the harbour to the promenade proper, although there are plenty of restaurants and shops within striking distance.

Did you know that the "Man In The Iron Mask" was held in a fortress on one of the two small islands a couple of miles away from Cannes?

.
The Man in the Iron Mask (d. November 1703) was a prisoner held in a number of prisons, including the Bastille and the Chateau d'If, during the reign of Louis XIV of France. The identity of this man has been thoroughly discussed, mainly because no one ever saw his face as it was hidden by a mask of black velvet cloth, which later re-tellings of the story have said to have been an iron mask.

What facts are known about this prisoner are based mainly on correspondence between his jailer and his superiors in Paris.

The Château d'If is a stable (later a prison) located on the island of If, the smallest island in the Frioul Archipelago situated in the Mediterranean Sea about a mile offshore in the Bay of Marseille in southeastern France. It is famous for being one of the settings of Alexandre Dumas' adventure novel The Count of Monte Cristo.
