View Full Version : Things to think about when choosing your cabin

If you have never been on a cruise before you may not be sure of all these cabin grades etc and what is best for you. Well here are some important things to think about.
Would you prefer inside (no window)
outside (window)
Balcony (means you can sit outside)
Well I always say that my cabin isnt all that important as long as its clean and comfortable.
However many people choose a cabin with window as they like to be able to look outside to see what weather is like etc before venturing out. Others like to be surprised. Others prefer a balcony as they can sit and relax without worrying too much about being disturbed by others and also you know your guaranteed your own sun bed.
The Important thing here is what you think you will use your cabin for if like me you just sleep in it then is it really that important to have a balcony. Then again if you like to spend time in your cabin relaxing with a drink before dinner or to have breakfast in your cabin then a balcony may be for you.

I've been lucky to have had 2 balcony cabins (RCCL), and on our first cruise (with Thomson's), we had an ocean view cabin. Personally, I couldn't bear to have an inside cabin - I have to be able to see outside. I must be a touch claustrophic!
What I don't understand though is the difference between categories of cabins. For instance, we're booked on Voyager of the Seas for next summer. When looking at the cabins, there's a difference in price within categories, but they're all the same size and the pictures are identical. So for example, why is an E3 dearer than E1 and E2?

Ever since 1998 when Fred Olsen very kindly upgraded us from a balcony cabin to a suite, nothing less than a suite will do.
The extra space and big balcony are what we like, plus two wash basins in the bathroom.
Costs a fortune though - b****y Fred Olsen has got a lot to answer for!

same here ginny, my first cruise was with fred olsens black watch 5 years ago . we had a picture window [ which would of been great , 1st cruise ] 2 weeks before sail date we were upgraded to a junior suite [ fantastic !!!!]. following year we booked an outside got upgraded to balcony . once you,ve had a balcony there is no going back ..would not cruise if i could,nt have a balcony ! think fred olsen knows that once you,ve had balcony , you would book one, for future cruises.. they were right ..done 3 cruises with fred 2 with rci .. even tho on freds cruise the clientele are older , as much as i enjoyed rci , i preferred fred olsen , more expensive than rci .. but i still prefer fred !! wendy x

I wasn't keen on the inside cabin. I need to see whats going onfoxes_279 and I love to have a balcony. We do spend a lot of time on the balcony so it's a must for us. We had a suite this year for our Silver Wedding and I would love to be able to have one every cruise smilesmi

Depends on where we are cruising to, whether it's port intensive or lots of sea days.
We've sailed in insides, outsides, balconies and we did treat ourselves to a suite once.
I like balcony cabins at the rear of the ship for the views and they also seem more sheltered.
I don't think I would bother with a butler again, maybe a mini-suite if the price was right.
I also like to have cabins above and below us, they tend to be quieter.

Difference in grades???
Location (as sparkie said) - which deck, forward, aft, midship etc
Could be restricted view (always check this when you book)
BUT - you will notice for instance with the E2 and E3 as given as examples - at some points the grades change so you could save a few pounds booking the lower grade but in a location at the END of the higher grade...if you see what I mean - just the next cabin along. foxes_279

Its also worth checking that you are not below disco or certain other parts of the ship, which could create noise and keep you awake at night.

we have found that if there is an open deck above the cabin there can be substantial noise early in the morning when the crew are arranging the sunbeds!!!! so we usually try to choose a cabin sandwiched between other cabins (top and bottom) ....

We usually like to be sandwiched. On Navigator we were on deck 10 under the solarium....and we never heard a thing. Mind you once DH starts snoring you could barely here the fog horn!!!! whistlesmi

You think I jest!
It drives me mad - I usually got to bed after DH - I creep into the bedroom so as not to wake him and he and the dog (who sleeps at the foot of the bed on his floor cushion foxes_279!!!) are quiet as church mice. I slip into bed quietly and I guarantee within two minutes the dog starts dreaming and making "woof woof" noises under his breath, and DH starts snoring for England. It happens every night...I'm sure its a conspiracy.
That leaves me lying awake for an hour wanting to batter both of 'em. smacksmi
