Hurricane hits Mexico

The Mexican state of Veracruz was hit by heavy rain and strong winds as Hurricane Lorenzo hit land, according to American meteorologists.

Reuters reported on September 28th that the hurricane had come ashore 40 miles south south-west of the port of Tuxpan shortly before 06:00 GMT.

Wind speeds of up to 80 miles per hour and rainfall of up to 25 centimetres have been predicted by the US National Hurricane Centre.

Local authorities were well prepared for Lorenzo's arrival and around 100,000 people were evacuated from their homes and spent the night on camp beds in public buildings inland.

Five dead following hurricane

At least five people have been killed in eastern Mexico following the arrival of Hurricane Lorenzo, according to government officials.

Associated Press reported on September 30th that the hurricane had made landfall two days earlier before quickly fading to a rainstorm as it travelled across the east and central areas of Mexico.

Some of the areas it passed through experienced 33 centimetres of rainfall in a single day, leading to mudslides and floods and causing river levels to rise by more than 600 centimetres.

Three people were killed when a mudslide hit the village of Ixtaczoquitla, while two were swept away by flood waters in the village of Rancho Nuevo.

Thousands of homes were damaged by strong winds and hundreds more flooded by high waters, which local officials have predicted will take weeks to disperse.
